There are several different methods used for the evaluation of innersprings and boxsprings, testing for measurements regarding firmness, firmness retention, durability, effect of impact etc. The Cornell Type Tester is used to test the long term capacity of bedding to resist cyclic loading. The machine consists of a double hemispherical ram head on a manually adjustable shaft. A load cell is located on the ram head to measure the force being applied to the mattress. The shaft is connected to an adjustable eccentric which is rotated by an electric motor at up to 160 cycles per minute, variable. The bedding is located below the ram, and the eccentric and shaft position adjusted so that the maximum load of 1025N and the minimum load of 22N is applied when the eccentric is rotated to the lowest and highest positions respectively. A position transducer is located so the position of the ram head can be measured automatically.

The Coefficient of Friction Tester unit can measure Static COF (peak) from a resting position and continue to move testing surfaces in a relative motion to give an accurate kinetic COF (dynamic) Result. This model features a stationary sled with a moving plane and also comes with the option of computer software to record data. Peel Testing can also be carried out on this unit. The Foam Porosity Tester is used for monitoring the porosity of flexible cellular polyurethane. The machine determines how easy air passes through a cellular structure. Airflow values may be used as an indirect measurement of certain cell structure characteristics. The F0031 model foam porosity tester is made with reference to international standards for measurement of a flexible cellular test piece, 50mm x 50mm x 25mm, it is placed in a vacuum chamber cavity and a specified automatic constant differential air pressure is applied. The F0031’s Pa Pressure can be digitally set on the display and once the FPT reaches the Pa automatically the rate of airflow at the set Pa is locked in and (Held) on the Flow display automatically completing a test in seconds.

The Universal Testing Machine has been specially designed and manufactured to perform tests in both compression and tensile, without having to change the attachments. The universal measurement of firmness and hardness is based on a physical property called the indentation force deflection (IFD). It is calculated by determining the force required to deflect a test piece a percentage of its original thickness using a circular indentor, which applies a force, while also recording the degree of indentation. IDM Instruments Pty Ltd has designed their Universal Testing Machine with fixed dual testing capabilities comprising of compression testing on the inner and tensile testing on the outer frame. By incorporating the dual testing space design, this eliminates the need of having two machines required for testing. The same machine is used for compression and tensile testing.

The Mattress Rollator & Durability Tester has been designed to determine the durability of any type of Boxspring, Innerspring, Latex or Polyurethane mattress, by simulating long-term use conditions. The M0015 has eliminated the need for a large moving cross beam, providing a safer, smaller work area with less moving hazards. Operation height is lower, minimizing lifting of mattresses and making it easier for loading and un-loading. The Box Opening Pressure Tester has been designed to measure the opening force of flat stacked carton boxes. The Box Opening Pressure Tester is used for the development and quality control of cartons during production, there for speeding up production set-up time. This motorized test stand is a highly configurable single column force tester for tension and compression measurement applications up to 300 lbF (1.5kN). It has a rugged design suitable for laboratory and production enviroments. The Gelbo Flex Tester with Particle Counter is to measure the amount of loose fibres (lint) shed from non-woven materials in a 30 second time period of flexing. It is important that non-woven textile materials must have a low tendency to lint. The IDM Gelbo Flex Tester with Particle Counter is a fast and accurate instrument for determining the linting of non-woven materials. This test can also be applied to other materials like tissues. The sample is subjected to repetitive twisting and compression cycles, air is withdrawn from the testing chamber and particles in the air stream are counted and classified with the laser particle counter. Gelbo Flex Tester with Particle Counter consists of two 82.8mm diameter mandrels, one fixed and the other attached to a moveable arm to perform the flexing action. The moveable mandrel twists and compresses the sample at 60 cycles/min of 180° rotation over 120mm of stroke.

The Laboratory Press is designed for pressing or helping to form samples between two platens. Two digital temperature controllers enable the platens to be heated or cooled and even set process times for heating and cooling. A digital panel meter is used to display the compression force (kgf) enabling fast and accurate operation.

The DuPont Impact Tester has been designed to test the endurance of coated material, when impacted by a falling weight at specified points. The purpose of the test is to see if test specimens can resist the effect of rapid impact testing. The principle of the test is that a coated test specimen is impacted by a falling weight, at a fixed height; thus checking the damage or deformation of the test specimen. The DuPont Impact Tester can also be used on paintings with coated materials. The same procedure is followed, using various impact heads or needles to drop freely onto the test specimen from a certain height. This is performed three times on the same test specimen, which is then left to stand for one hour. The test specimen is then checked for any cracking on the painting.
