Structural Engineers conceive and design structures. Bridges, dams, ports, tunnels, skyscrapers and houses are examples of structures that support the human activity and contribute to the society as we know it. Most structures are technically challenging and push engineering to the limits. These are often subjected to extreme events, such as earthquakes, storms, explosions and fire. They can also be exposed to harsh environments under extreme conditions, whether due to the exposure to chemically aggressive agents or to extreme temperatures, moisture or pressure conditions, such as the ones found in deep oceans or arctic regions, industrial facilities or even in the outer space. In order to safely analyse, design and manage efficient and modern structures, the structural engineer uses a range of methods to analyse and design structures with quantifiable reliability over their design life. The Structural Engineering Master programme at the University of Minho (STREMUM) provides world class training to prospective students in search for a challenging international graduate programme.
