Glass Neutral Density filters attenuate light by absorption just like the gelatine neutral density filters. Glass ND Filters are more robust and tend to have more uniform absorption characteristics. They also attenuate by absorption and so care must be taken to avoid overheating. Attenuation is achieved by polishing glass to the correct thickness. Knight Optical offers stock absorptive ND filters in 12.5mm and 25mm diameters, and 50x50mm squares manufactured from high quality glass. Each filter is available with blocking between 0.1 and 4.0 OD and are available to purchase direct from this page. Within medicine the use of polarised light was first introduced back in the70’s; since then it has come leaps and bounds. How it has been used to help with imaging skin pathologies, when the skin is illuminated by linearly polarised light it causes backscattering of the superficial layers of the skin where cancer often arises. This superficial backscattered light can be distinguished from the diffused reflected light when using a detector. Polarised Beam-Splitter Cubes, Sheet Linear Polarisers, and Sheet Circular Polarisers are often used within detection devices for this type of skin pathology imaging. Knight Optical’s Low GDD Ultrafast Laser Mirrors are ideal for demanding laser applications, especially where femtosecond ultrafast lasers are utilised. Our product catalogue consists of laser mirrors optimised for the fundamental and second harmonic (SHG) emissions of Ytterbium (Yb) doped lasers including diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) and fiber lasers, and therefore have a design wavelength of either 515nm or 1030nm. Their key features include: •Ion beam sputtered (IBS) coating which is compact and durable. •Reflection > 99.9% within their wavelength range of either 500-530nm or 1010-1050nm. •Available as 0° and 45° angle of incidence •Exhibit minimal group delay dispersion (GDD) to prevent pulse broadening •High laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) •Precision flatness and surface quality to minimise laser scattering All of the above are important criteria for mirrors used to form a laser resonator, making these laser mirrors ideal.

Optical flats are single precision flat surfaces. They are used as reference surfaces to compare flatness of a substrate where flatness is unknown. When a high quality optical flat is placed on top of a polished substrate and used in conjunction with a monochromatic light source light bands are formed. The light bands that are present are known as interference fringes and their shape represents how flat the part being tested measures. Dependent on how many rings are formed or how straight the presented lines are is an indication of how flat the tested part is. Optical flats are used for testing gauge blocks. Optical flats are also used in interferometers and high quality flat optical mirror and window sub-straights for laser applications. This range of quartz optical flats are single-sided. Knight Optical offer a range of Stock N-BK7 Dome Windows, for use with Underwater Lighting. A dome is an optical window composed of two parallel curved surfaces. Domes are commonly used in defence applications and often in extreme environments such as Submersible ROV’s. The shape of the window creates a naturally strong shape that gets tougher under pressure. Using a curved dome optical surface allows for an increased beam angle, therefore allowing a greater area to be lit from one light source. For visible applications, N-BK7 with its high optical quality and uniform transmission and low absorption in the visible spectrum makes it an ideal material for underwater lighting. A tough and cost effective solution which allows for good transmission of the light source in the underwater environment will both protect the light source as well as transmitting from 300nm up to 2µm.
