The Coiled Spring Pin was invented by SPIROL in 1948. SPIROL offers Coiled Pins in three duties, light, standard and heavy, to provide a variety of combinations of strength, flexibility and diameters to accommodate different host materials and applications. Standard duty (sometimes called "medium" duty) Coiled Spring Pins are generally recommended for use in nonferrous and mild steel assemblies and provide the optimum combination of strength and flexibility in these materials. Standard duty Coiled Pins are also preferred in hardened components when there is enough space to accommodate the larger diameter to withstand the applied force because of their ability to absorb shock and vibration. SPIROL's standard duty Coiled Spring Pins are offered in both metric (conforms to ISO 8750 and ASME B18.8.3M) and inch (conforms to ASME B18.8.2) sizes.

SPIROL’s heavy duty & fatigue resistant Coiled Spring Pins are available in diameters ranging from 1.5mm (.062") up to 20mm (.750"). Standard materials include high carbon steel, 302/304 nickel (austenitic) stainless steel, and 420 chrome (martensitic) stainless steel. Diameters larger than 12mm (.500") are available in 6150 alloy steel. SPIROL invented the Coiled Spring Pin in 1948. Coiled Pins are available in light duty, standard duty and heavy duty to match the required strength and flexibility for each application. A pin too strong for the applied load will not flex and may damage the hole. A pin that is too flexible may fatigue prematurely within the assembly. The Coiled Pin with the optimal balance of strength, flexibility and diameter will result in the prolonged useful life of the assembly.

Light Duty Coiled Spring Pins are generally recommended for soft, brittle or thin materials such as plastics, aluminium, die castings, ceramics, and where holes are located close to an edge of the assembly. In situations not subjected to significant loads, such as when used purely for alignment or as an axle, light duty Coiled Pins are often used because of easy installation resulting from lower insertion force.

The Series 550 Cosmetic Coiled Pin was designed specifically for cosmetic cases to ensure the perfect balance of strength and flexibility. The 1-1/2 coil construction ensures that the Cosmetic Coiled Pin exerts sufficient radial force to achieve the long-term desired swing torque while protecting the plastic from excessive stresses. The use of SPIROL Series 550 Cosmetic Coiled Pin will simplify your design and manufacturing process. Uniform radial spring force results in controlled hinge movement and a hinge quality that remains consistent over time. Controlled hinge movement is achieved with wider tolerances and lower moulding costs than when a Solid Pin or cut wire is used. Finally, low insertion force and compression of the pin during installation minimises hinge stress and scrap. The net result is the prolonged useful life of the assembly.

SPIROL's Series 880 Coiled Spring Pin was designed specifically for use as the hinge pin for PC board card lock and ejector clip mechanisms. The quality of the hinge is unsurpassed by other fastening methods due to the low insertion force and compression of the pin during and after installation. As with all Coiled Spring Pins, the Series 880 hinge pin for PC board card locks and ejector clips is self-retaining, and thus no secondary processes are required for retention. The Coiled Pin's uniform radial spring force results in a controlled hinge movement that remains consistent throughout the life of the assembly.
