Sodium Isobutyl Xanthate (SIBX) is available in the form of pale-yellow crystals or powdered form in the pure state. It is also available in the form of a solution. In the solid form, SIBX absorbs moisture from the air, and so, it is known as a hygroscopic substance. SIBX emits the odor of carbon disulfide that is somewhat the same as that of decaying cabbage. In some cases, SIBX can emit a very faint unpleasant, or sulfurousodor. SIBX is readily soluble in water and could form insoluble compounds with different metallic ions.

Despite being a monohydrate salt (crystallized from clod water) the salt can also crystalize in hot water to become anhydrous (water-free). This property becomes possible as it has a high melting point of 156 degrees Celsius. This property along with the ability to bond with other metal ions to form complex molecules makes it a good chelating agent for several industrial applications. Some of these applications include the removal of limescale from evaporators and boilers.

Given that Ferric alum is powder that does not burn when it is exposed to fire, it is commonly used in firefighting foams. When applied at the base of fire, it forms a blanket that prevents the combusting materials from accessing oxygen that is required for them to keep burning. Some water treatment firms use the salt for treatment of water. During the treatment of water, the electrons in the water hydrolyze fast forming combinations with various metal elements in water. They form slats that sediment at the base of the container and can be filtered away. Unlike many water purification agents, Ferric alum can work at very low temperature. This makes it ideal for water treatment during fall and winter seasons. The same compound works well in disinfecting and treatment of sewerage systems. It combines with organic matter and deals with the resulting odor.
